The people of the Barker Institute include those from the whole of the Barker College community who contribute their intellectual resources to bring about learning and growth in the community. The team of researchers who facilitate this community include:

Dr Matthew Hill
Director of the Barker Institute 

 

Dr Matthew Hill is the Director of The Barker Institute with a focus on professional learning, research, and innovation in the school. He teaches Physics and the new Science Extension course at the School which introduces students to scientific academic research. Matthew's doctorate reflects his passion for science education focussing on Representational Fluency amongst physics students at school and university. He has published in leadership, education, and science journals and been involved in course development and teaching at The University of Sydney and The University of Western Sydney. He has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Divinity at Ridley College in Melbourne.

Mrs Susan Layton
Research Administration Assistant


After completing a double degree in Arts and Business from Deakin University, Susan studied Mandarin in Taiwan under a graduate scholarship awarded by the Australian Vice Chancellors Committee. She has worked for Government and private business in Asia, the UK and Australia. Susan is excited about the opportunity to approach current and future issues facing education from a research perspective.


Miss Sarah Clifton
Director of Professional Learning 

As Director of Professional Learning Sarah delivers a learning program for staff supporting the Barker College Teaching and Learning Framework. Prior to this appointment she led a large department as the Head of PDHPE. Sarah has many years of experience teaching the mandatory 7 – 10 PDHPE courses and developed a now thriving Stage 5 and Stage 6 elective program. Although holding a passion for all physical activity and having coached across a range of sports at Barker, basketball is her number 1. Sarah has been the co-curricular coordinator of Girls’ basketball, continues to coach the 1st team along with undertaking selector and coach roles at ISA and CIS level.

Dr Timothy Scott
Research Fellow


Dr Timothy Scott is an experienced History and German language teacher. His PhD investigated socio-political influences on contemporary German conceptions of history and archaeology. Most recently, Dr Scott was the Director of Academic Affairs at an international school in Germany. In this role, he shared the responsibility for setting the school’s strategic direction for intercultural teaching and learning, and for building and sustaining an interlingual learning community focused on delivering quality international education. Dr Scott returned to Australia in 2018 and he currently teaches History at Barker. He is also a Research Fellow at the Barker Institute.

Dr Greg Cunningham
Director of Accreditation

 

Dr Greg Cunningham has a special research interest in visual literacy having completed a doctorate in this field. He was also a post-doctoral scholar at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. A passionate teacher of English, Greg has presented research on emerging practices in the English classroom at conferences in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. He lead the team that introduced the Teaching for Understanding framework at Barker and he has been a research collaborator with Harvard University. Greg also represented the independent school sector on the NESA Professional Learning and Advisory Committee. In this capacity, he has also served as an assessor and consultant on accreditation processes and professional development in NSW.
